Police follow smoke plume and find fire that’s ‘beyond belief’

Cops fumed it was 'beyond belief' that rubbish had been left to burn in a field in Warwickshire as 34C heat hit the region. Warwickshire Rural Crime Team was left staggered after spotting a huge plume of acrid black smoke yesterday (August 14). The team were on patrol around the Ryton Pools Country Park area when they saw the smoke on the horizon and decided to see where it was coming from.

When they arrived at the site in Leamington Road, Ryton, they found an off-duty Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighter, who had also seen the smoke from Leamington and raised the alarm with fire crews. "What we found really was beyond belief," said a post on the Warwickshire Rural Crime Team page on Facebook.

"Someone had decided that in 34-degree heat yesterday, was the perfect time to burn a load of old kitchen units, trees and rubbish in the middle of a field! The fire was irresponsibly unattended and had already started to spread across the open field towards the nearby woods and residential area." Three fire appliances were needed to put out the fire and make the area safe again.

"Strangely, no one made themselves known to officers for starting the fire," the post concluded.
