Driver caught speeding on M53 makes worrying admission to police

A motorist caught speeding on the M53 made a worrying admission to police. The driver was stopped by officers while travelling along the motorway this morning (Monday, August 29). Officers in a marked police car followed the motorist for more than two miles as they were travelling between 80 and 85mph, reports the Liverpool Echo.[1]

They were also based in lane three, despite the other lanes being clear. Police pulled the driver over and they then made the admission that they were unaware of the correct speed limit. READ MORE: On board the brand new Merseyrail train which is 'worth the wait'[2]

The person, who police said has been a driver for 10 years, believed that the speed limit was 80mph. Posting about the incident to Twitter, a spokesperson for Merseyside police's road unit said: "The driver of this vehicle was stopped on the M53 after being paced at 80-85mph with a marked Police vehicle behind for over 2 miles and sat in lane 3 when other lanes clear. "When asked why, the driver, of 10 years, genuinely believed the speed limit to be 80mph."
